Who Is Fami Abey?
Fami Abey, born Julian Abey Abey in Widikum, a rural town in Cameroon, is a passionate reggae artist, writer, and dreamer. Raised by his grandmother and great-grandmother, Fami discovered his voice early in life. At the age of eight, he wrote his first song, an ode to the women in his community, which he performed for his family. Their encouragement sparked a fire in him that has never dimmed.
While he had a natural gift for music and storytelling, Fami's path was not straightforward. His father discouraged him from pursuing music or sports, encouraging him instead to focus on academics. Fami went on to study Marketing Management at university, but he never stopped writing, performing, or dreaming. His passion for music lived quietly inside him, until it could no longer be contained.
What Makes Fami Unique?
Fami Abey is a spontaneous and gifted writer with a deep sensitivity to the world around him. He blends raw talent with a grounded understanding of human emotion, culture, and positivity. Though he once played soccer and performed in high school, his true strength lies in his ability to tell stories through music.
He draws from personal experience, ancestral heritage, and a desire to uplift. His grandfather, Benedict Abey, was one of the rulers of the dynasty of Widikum, an ethnic group of the Bantu people, was a respected bandleader and musician who led a six-piece band that performed in Cameroon and Nigeria during the 1950s. Music runs in the family, but Fami is the first to bring that legacy into reggae.
Why Reggae?
Though Fami grew up listening to Cameroonian makossa music, his life changed forever when a childhood friend introduced him to Bob Marley's music. From that moment, reggae became more than a genre, it became a calling.
Fami had already been performing songs by Bryan Adams and Lucky Dube in school, but after discovering Marley, something clicked: reggae spoke directly to his soul. Despite being told that "only two people from Africa ever made it in reggae" (Lucky Dube and Alpha Blondy) he chose not to listen to the doubters.
"I've held back for too long. Now, I'm ready to unleash everything inside me."
Passions & Purpose
Fami Abey is passionate about nature, positive energy, and creating music that lifts people up. For him, reggae is more than rhythm, it's a healing vibration. His ultimate vision is to bring reggae home to Africa, particularly Cameroon, and let it bloom from the roots up.
"Africa is the motherland, but Jamaica is the heartbeat of reggae and where I want to begin sharing my voice."
Current Projects & Collaborations
Fami is currently working on his debut album, set to launch with its first single in November. The project is being produced in Jamaica by the renowned Stephen Stewart, a globally respected music producer known for his work with reggae legends.
The album features a lineup of iconic musicians and a surprise collaboration that Fami believes will resonate deeply with listeners.
"I'm honored to work with such legends. The lineup is worth the wait, and I can't wait for the world to hear what we've created.”
Legacy in the Making
Fami Abey is building his legacy with every word, melody, and performance. He's been writing songs since the age of eight, but now, he's found his true voice and it sings in reggae.
He hopes that through his music, listeners will not only feel good but feel inspired to express themselves freely, follow their own paths, and embrace the light within.
"I've got so much to say, so much to sing and I hope when people hear my songs, they'll want to sing along."
